You’re probably thinking, “Why talk about food in a newsletter about neurodivergence at work?” Because nutrition impacts how we function as humans—at work AND outside of it. Redesigning life for your brain includes looking at your whole life, including what you eat. I’m a raccoon trash panda On low-energy days, I’ll grab whatever’s easiest and shove it in my mouth (great visual, I know). I’ve gone from prepping elaborate meals for the entire week to phases where cooking is as appealing as razor burn. During what I call my “ raccoon trash panda” phases, I’m hungry, too tired to cook and reaching for whatever’s on hand. These pantry items are how I self-accommodate and eat healthy-ish: 90-second microwaveable rice canned / microwaveable beans canned fish precooked pouch vegetables protein powder high protein snacks (nuts, yogurt, cheese, etc). Neurodivergent life hack—automate eating Creating a system, rather than relying on willpower or motivation, increases the likelihood of follow through—even when your energy is low. The less you have to think about what to eat, the easier it is to consistently make good food choices. Having reliable “go-to” ingredients in your pantry means you don’t have to decide what to make, start from scratch, or spend much time preparing. Why should you care? Quality nutrition is one of the foundations of mental and physical health. What you eat impacts your energy, sleep, mood, metabolism and long term functioning (Firth et al., 2019). If you’re already burnt out , nutrition deficiencies can add to fatigue, concentration difficulties, and decreased ability to regulate emotions (National Institute of Health, 2025). That’s why as a 37 year-old AuDHD woman, my focus has shifted from how my body looks to how I feel in it—and giving it what it needs to stay functional as I age. Pantry food rules I follow I choose items that I can quickly open, microwave and plop in a bowl with seasonings. High protein—helps meet daily protein intake + low carb items. Versatile—can be mixed with other ingredients for multiple dishes Low effort—takes less than 5ish minutes to throw a meal together Quality ingredients —shelf stable with short-ish ingredient lists Why should you care about protein? Your body uses it to maintain, build and repair muscles. For women especially, maintaining muscle mass and getting enough protein helps us stay strong & mobile, especially as we age (National Institute on Aging, 2022). 7 pantry items I recommend & have on auto-ship Get 30 Days Amazon Prime Free
